The REAL ID is a new standard for identification in the U.S., which was created to enhance security and prevent fraud. It applies to state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards, and it will affect things like airport security and federal access. Here’s a breakdown of what’s going on:

What REAL ID Does:

  1. Air Travel: Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license (or another acceptable form of ID, like a passport) to board domestic flights.

  2. Federal Buildings: It will be required to enter certain federal buildings and access nuclear power plants.

  3. Increased Security: It’s designed to make identification more secure, by requiring more documentation to verify your identity when you apply for the card.

What You Need to Do:

To get a REAL ID, you need to go to your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or the equivalent. The process varies slightly by state, but in general, you’ll need to:

  1. Proof of Identity: Provide documents like your birth certificate or passport.

  2. Proof of Social Security: Show your Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub with your SSN.

  3. Proof of Residency: Show documents that prove where you live, like utility bills or a lease agreement.

  4. Application: Fill out the application and pay any fees associated with the REAL ID.

Check with your state DMV to get a full list of required documents, as it may differ by state.

What Happens if You Don’t Get It:

If you don’t get a REAL ID by the deadline (May 7, 2025), you’ll still be able to use your standard driver’s license or ID for most purposes, but you won’t be able to use it for:

  • Flying domestically: You won’t be able to board a domestic flight without another form of accepted identification (like a passport).

  • Entering federal facilities: Some federal facilities will require REAL ID for entry.

In short, if you plan to travel by air or need access to certain federal facilities, you’ll need the REAL ID to avoid complications. If you don't need it for those purposes, you might not have to worry about it right away.
